Group Health Insurance

Small Groups

Small groups are defined as having 50 or less full time equivalent employees. These plans are built using off-the-shelf rates based on the location, age, gender, etc. of the enrolled members. Each insurance company has their own criteria regarding minimum enrollees, percentage enrolled etc. which may restrict their offerings.

Large Groups

Large groups are defined as having 51 or more employees. Plan rates are built using medical underwriting and the historical experience of the group in previous years. Plans may be fully insured in which case the insurance company takes on the whole risk, or self funded, or partially self funded in which case the employer has an opportunity to recoup some of the premium if medical costs are less than projected.
